Bathroom remodeling is a huge undertaking that will rule your bank account, your spare time, and your day-to-day functionality for several months.

Taking the time to plan properly can save you a lot of time and money. Here are three things you must ask yourself before you call your contractor.

What does your bathroom do now?

Thinking through what your bathroom does now—what it does well and what could be improved—is the perfect place to get started. Think about

  • How many people live in your home and will use this bathroom
  • How many bathrooms are currently in your home
  • How old the people are who live in your home
  • If the bathroom will be used by more than one person at a time (getting ready in the morning)
  • What kinds of things you and your family do in this bathroom, besides the usual (reading, music, TV, relaxation, coffee, etc.)
  • If you ever run out of hot water
  • Things about the current bathroom that don’t work

Analyze the typical day in the life of your bathroom. This will help you identify the things that you want to keep the same and what you would like to change as you take the next step in the planning process.

What do you want your new bathroom to do?

Don’t design your bathroom strictly around looks. Yes, the style of the room is certainly important, but functionality should be in the driver’s seat.  Set some goals for your new bathroom’s function. Ask yourself

  • Does the layout work the way it is, or do you need to make some changes
  • Can you get to everything you need fairly easily (linens and supplies)
  • Are you concerned about conserving water and energy
  • Do you have enough electrical outlets
  • What would make your bathroom more comfortable
  • Do you need to make the bathroom more accessible (for children, grandparents, or special needs)
  • What perk would you love to have but don’t think you can (coffee maker, soaking tub, sound system, TV, pedicure station)
  • Does it have enough storage
When you have a vision for what you want your new bathroom to do better than the old bathroom, it completely changes your approach to designing your space. It becomes more than just an update. It is design customized to your daily life and habits.

How do you want your bathroom to feel?

If functionality is driving this crazy bathroom remodel, then style is riding shotgun.

Whether we want to admit it or not, the bathroom is one of the most used rooms in the house. Many people are starting to see the bathroom as the personal oasis. The kitchen may be one of your favorite gathering places, but the bathroom can be where you go to unwind and regroup by yourself.

So, how do you want your bathroom to feel?

  • Rejuvenating, bright nature-inspired spa

  • Relaxing on the massage table in a dimly lit room

  • Making fashion choices from a full vanity and streamlined closet

  • Taking in the latest episode of your favorite TV show while on vacation

  • Letting the kids extend playtime to bath time

  • Enjoying a no-nonsense, clean space that helps you get to work on time

Let your bathroom be your sanctuary. Take the time to think through what you need and want from your bathroom and you’ll be well on your way to a successful bathroom remodel.
