Kitchen Design for the Man of the House
You’ve heard that men are the best cooks? Well, men all over America are taking that saying to heart and migrating en masse to the kitchen. We’re not talking grill master cooking. We’re talking chef-level, grind-his-own-spices in the mortar cooking. And the men of the house have a lot to say about how the kitchen is designed.
The latest kitchen design is taking on a more masculine functionality these days. “Kitchens are more tailored, more masculine, more streamlined and that reflects the male drive and participation in kitchen design,” designer Young Huh told Lisbeth Calandrino at Floor Covering News.
And the industry agrees. A survey by the National Kitchen & Bath Association found that the top kitchen trend in 2016 is clean lined functionality. Where women may be more concerned with the look of the kitchen, the men may be more about the way they are able to work in the space.
Dark colors, chrome and bold geometric patterns are a favorite for many men. Anything that creates interest and drama but is still simple is a great addition to masculine design. Very little ornamentation or detail is apparent in this type of design. It’s focused more on clean lines and functionality than anything else.
Along with a more streamlined design, men want pro-grade appliances and high-tech sundries like docking and charging stations and smart home elements. The only downside is as soon as the next model of smart refrigerator comes out, he’ll want to upgrade.
