The New American Home Concept House
In January 2016, the National Association of Home Builders presented The New American Home—an idea home built to showcase the season’s hottest products, design trends and construction methods.
The beautiful home built in Henderson, Nevada, was designed to fit several types of buyers from families to multigenerational to empty-nesters. Walkout basements, Jack-and-Jill baths, multiple master suites and in bedroom kitchenettes make this home one that suits many needs.
Sustainable, Smart, Comfortable
Element Design Build, designer and builder on the project, took on the challenge of approaching this home completely differently than usual. Human comfort was at the center of the home’s design. Research in human metabolic rates while sleeping, sitting, during activity, when wearing short sleeves or long were taken into account while trying to harness temperature and relative humidity in the home.
All that attention to human comfort also made the home more healthy and efficient. Energy recovery ventilators cut down on energy consumption and improve air quality. State-of-the-art windows cut down on heat and cooling costs and provide a great view of the Vegas Strip.
All the appliances are Energy Star certified. The paints, adhesives, stains, etc. were all low VOC. All the wood is formaldehyde-free. Low-flow shower heads and dual flush toilets cut down on water consumption and the landscaping is made up of native plants that withstand drought. All irrigation is weather sensitive, which means you won’t see the sprinklers on when it’s raining.
An emphasis on comfort also made automation a priority. Whole-house automation means control over the environment wherever, whenever. In fact, the home’s Savant App system controls lighting, shades, security, entertainment and climate from one interface.
Outdoor living is an absolute must-have for many homeowners. The backyard is the second living room. The New American Home’s outdoor setup includes a full outdoor kitchen and all the comforts of the indoors including icemaker, searing station, refrigerator, bar and storage.
Special attention was given to indoor to outdoor transitions with glass walls that slide back into pockets. Automated doors with panels that slide out of sight open up the view and further expand the space into the outdoors.
The interior design is a comfortable contemporary style that aims to show that high-style is achievable at any budget. Furnishings and accessories in the house were not high-end, but reminiscent of high-end, proving that even on a budget, your design can be trend-setting.
The attention given to the architecture of the home allowed designers to make the most of the beautiful views the property offered. Adjustments were made to the original plan to ensure the house would be the most efficient and sustainable it could be. The integration of the architecture, construction, landscaping and interior design is what makes this house the success that it is.
