Design Is in the Details

Having trouble making that final selection for your backsplash mosaic? There are so many to choose from, it can be an ordeal to find just the right one. Daltile wants to help you narrow down your choices. Here are a few ways to do that.
Determine Who’s Driving
The tricky part about choosing mosaic tile is figuring out which element in your kitchen or bath is driving the design. Unless you are going for a highly eclectic design, you’ll want to choose just one or two elements that stand out and everything else has to play a supporting role to that. If you go with a busy floor, a busy backsplash may end up overwhelming the room.
A good rule of thumb is to pick your countertop first. It is the palette from which you’ll make all your other choices. Depending on the countertop you choose, you may find it can harmonize many different elements into a cohesive design. On the other hand, if you have your heart set on a gorgeous mosaic, start there and let everything else build from there.

Blend Colors, Textures, Materials
Every good design needs some variation. An easy way to get that is to choose more than one color (but not more than three)! Different textures or different materials have the same effect—visual interest that finish your design.

Ask the Right Questions
If you have kids at home, there’s a whole host of questions you need to ask before even thinking about picking new mosaic. Durability and clean-ability might be real issues you need to consider before you invest in white marble for your kitchen. However, you can probably find a way to make that white marble work—seal it after it’s installed and clean it only with neutral products.

Select for Longevity of Design
If you’re not planning on staying put for the long haul, you might want to consider selecting a backsplash that is appealing to the general population—not too bold, not too boring. If you’ll sell your home at some point do a little research to find out what adds value to a home and what might be considered a turn off.
