Getting everything you want out of your shower is often easier said than done. What you need is a little advice to help you achieve the perfect shower. Here are a few secrets—from picking the right bathroom shower tile to making your shower an oasis of relaxation—that can take your shower from good to exceptional.

#1 Multi-Tasking Space

Stop thinking of your shower as just a place to get clean. With a little creative thinking, it can be much more.

Wet Room

Extend the concept of the shower over the whole bathroom. Cover it in tile and turn it into a wet room. You’ll enjoy a more open floor plan that’s easy to care for and can double as a utility room.

Steam Room

Think a steam room is something from the lifestyles of the rich and famous? Not so. You can turn your shower into a steam room by enclosing it and installing the right equipment. Include seating space so you can fully relax in your steam room.

Built-Ins

Built-in shelves in the shower give you extra storage in the bathroom. You’ll have room for all your soaps, shampoos loofas, etc. plus whatever else you need like toys for the kids or shaving equipment.

#2 Materials

If you choose your materials well, you’ll have a shower that will last through years of wear and tear. Bathroom tile is usually your best option. It is a durable material that meets the daily demands of your bathroom. And it has incredible design flexibility with tiles in just about any look or style you can dream up.

Mosaic Tile

A mosaic tile design is flexible and can be adapted for any design from 1 x 1 squares or penny rounds to specialty shapes and custom art in the Roman bathhouse style.

Large Format

Though your shower is usually a smaller space, large tiles can add distinction. Consider a larger tile on the wall in rectangular shape for an on-trend bathroom shower tile.

#3 Lighting

Lighting in the shower? Yes, because you know that the vanity lights have never been enough. Lighting is a priority for designers these days more so than before.

Showerhead Lights

Some showerheads come with built-in lighting. Shop around to find LED lighting for a little mood in your shower.

Skylights and Windows

Skylights allow plenty of natural light into your shower enlivening you with nature as you start your day. If you don’t have the ability to put in a skylight, consider windows. Large or small, windows have the same effect.

Traditional Lighting

Some recessed lighting gives you just enough illumination and enhances the atmosphere of your shower. Be sure to get lighting that can withstand high levels of moisture. Look for multi-tasking lighting that can act as a fan as well as a light.

#4 Outdoor Access

A trend that’s gaining popularity quickly is the shower with access to the outdoors—literal or figurative. This Zen design feature not only lets you out into nature, but also lets nature in.

Wall of Windows

Construct one or more walls of your shower in floor to ceiling glass and fully enjoy your view. Include plenty of plants both inside and out for the full effect.

Garden Shower

Turn those glass walls into doors and you have direct access to your garden, swimming pool, or hot tub.

#5 His and Hers

You did it with the vanities, why not the shower too? Don’t limit space in the shower, especially if you are sharing your bathroom with your significant other.

Two Showerheads

Go for two showerheads in your shower. It creates two showering spaces within one shower for personalized space and plenty of hot water to go around on a busy morning.

Two Showers

You could also opt for two separate showers spaces in your bathroom just like your vanities. You are still sharing the same bathroom space but don’t get in each other’s way.

#6 Accessibility

The bathroom presents hazards to anyone, not just the aged. A few design features can make the bathroom more comfortable for everyone.

Door-less

Make your shower door-less. They’re called walk-in showers and they are as wonderful as their counterparts—walk-in closets.

No-Threshold

A shower that’s flush with the rest of the bathroom floor makes getting in and out of the shower a non-issue. It’s completely accessible for everyone and it looks great.
